Christian McLaurin(they/them), known as SB the Moor (fka Signor Benedick the Moor) is a California based composer, emcee, multi-instrumentalist, music educator, visual artist, comic maker, and filmmaker known for work with underground labels Deathbomb Arc (deathgrips, clipping., JPEGMAFIA), and Ruby Yacht (R.A.P Ferreira- FKA milo, Pink Navel, Hemlock Ernst- aka Samuel Herring of Future Islands). Releasing numerous projects over the last decade, SB’s style remains experimental and forward thinking. Early releases saw SB disregarding genre, combining elements of rock, harsh noise, electronica, trap, and even chamber orchestra, sometimes within one song. Their newest album, In Babylon, is their most lyrical, straight forward hip hop release yet, seeing the Emcee spitting in top form over a range of west coast influenced beats. SB is most known for their live shows, which take on a theatrical, mystical quality, eschewing traditional “concert” routine for reactive and responsive emotional storytelling, equally influenced by the tradition of American Emcee’s and traditional West African Griot’s. SB has toured the United States and Europe with groups like clipping., RAP Ferreira (fka milo), and Daisy Mortem, and shared the stage with Wilco, Elucid, JPEGMAFIA, Backxwash, Ceschi, Open Mike Eagle, Deerhoof, and Pink Navel. In 2020 SB started their own record label, Ronin Records, to release their EP Aries//Venus (Ronin Records). In 2022 SB and composer Dr. Donia Jarrar began work as composition and production duo “Winged Hippo” to produce and record Dr. Jarrar’s theatrical, multimedia piece “Butcher”. Now in 2023, SB begins their Scoring career with a Live Film scoring event for Film Maudit Film Festival in Santa Monica, featuring compositions written on guitar for string band, as well as developing skills with Wwise and MetaSounds software in order to score video games.
